Anne Frank (Annelies Marie Frank) was a Jewish girl born in Frankfurt, Germany, who went into hiding with her family in Amsterdam during the Nazi occupation. While concealed in the Secret Annex, she kept a diary that recorded her thoughts, experiences, and observations. After the Annex was discovered in 1944, Anne was deported to concentration camps; she died in 1945. Her diary was published posthumously as The Diary of a Young Girl and became an influential firsthand account of the Holocaust.
