Susan J. Jeffers

Susan J. Jeffers was an American children's book illustrator known for her watercolor and ink illustrations. She also enjoyed oil painting portraits, still lifes, and plein air painting. Her landscapes often depicted locations around her home in Croton-on-Hudson, NY. She collaborated with writer Rosemary Wells on several books, including "Forest of Dreams," which won the Golden Kite Award for Picture Book Illustration in 1989. Jeffers also illustrated classic tales and poems such as "Hansel and Gretel," "Hiawatha," "The Nutcracker," and "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening." Her original stories include "Brother Eagle Sister Sky" and the "McDuff" series. She also illustrated "My Pony" and "My Chincoteague Pony," combining her passion for horses. Jeffers was a 1964 graduate of Pratt Institute. She was honored as a runner-up for the Caldecott Medal in 1974 for illustrating "Three Jovial Huntsmen."
