Thornton W. Burgess

Thornton Waldo Burgess was an American conservationist and author of children's stories. He was born on January 14, 1874, in Sandwich, Massachusetts. Despite financial struggles in his youth, he developed a deep love for nature through his explorations. Burgess pursued a career in writing, starting with poetry and advertisements before joining Phelps Publishing Company. He became widely known for his "Bedtime Stories" newspaper column and his numerous children's books featuring animal characters, which often conveyed lessons about nature conservation, ecology, kindness, and honesty. He was also involved in conservation efforts and received an honorary literary degree from Northeastern University. Burgess died on June 5, 1965.
