Dame Rose Tremain (born Rosemary Jane Thomson) is an English novelist and short-story writer known for empathetic, character-driven fiction often focused on outsiders and historical settings. Her notable novels include Restoration (1989), Music & Silence (1999), The Road Home (2008) and The Gustav Sonata (2016). She has won major awards including the Whitbread (Costa) Book Award and the Orange Prize for Fiction, and was appointed CBE (2007) and advanced to DBE in 2020. She has served as Chancellor of the University of East Anglia and has published novels, short-story collections and a memoir, Rosie: Scenes from a Vanished Life (2018).
