Tony Hillerman (1925–2008) was an American novelist best known for his Navajo Tribal Police mystery series featuring Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee. His work combined tightly plotted crime fiction with rich evocations of Navajo culture and the Southwest landscape, and helped popularize Native American settings in modern mystery fiction.
