David Andrew Gemmell (1 August 1948 – 28 July 2006) was a British author best known for heroic and epic fantasy, particularly his debut novel Legend (1984) and the long-running Drenai saga. A former journalist and newspaper editor, Gemmell published more than thirty novels that combined strong, flawed heroes with themes of honour, loyalty and redemption. His work sold over a million copies worldwide and inspired the David Gemmell Legend Award for fantasy.
