Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a British writer and physician, best known for his four novels and fifty-six short stories about the fictional detective Sherlock Holmes. He also created the Professor Challenger character and wrote historical novels, fantasy, science fiction, and works on spiritualism. Doyle was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. He served as a doctor on sea voyages before establishing a medical practice. His writing career began while he was a student, and his first published story was 'The Mystery of Sasassa Valley.' Doyle was knighted in 1902 for his service during the Boer War. He was a prolific author, producing over 200 stories and articles, poetry, and plays. He died in 1930 at the age of 71.
