Melvyn Bragg, Baron Bragg, is a prominent British broadcaster, author, and parliamentarian. Born in Carlisle and raised in Wigton, Cumberland, he is widely recognized for his extensive career in television and radio, most notably as the editor and presenter of 'The South Bank Show' and the long-running BBC Radio 4 discussion programme 'In Our Time'. As a prolific writer, he has authored numerous novels, many of which are set in his native Cumbria, as well as works of non-fiction, including 'The Adventure of English'. He was made a life peer in 1998.
