Anita Desai (born Anita Mazumdar) is an Indian novelist and professor known for her lyrical, introspective fiction exploring family life, identity and the interior lives of women. She has been shortlisted three times for the Booker Prize, won the Sahitya Akademi Award (1978) for Fire on the Mountain, and the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize (1983) for The Village by the Sea. Desai has taught creative writing at several U.S. colleges and was the John E. Burchard Professor of Humanities at MIT.
