Phyllis Dorothy James, Baroness James of Holland Park (3 August 1920 – 27 November 2014), known professionally as P. D. James, was an English novelist best known for her detective series featuring Commander Adam Dalgliesh. She worked in hospital administration and later in the Home Office before becoming a full-time writer. Her work spans crime fiction and broader literary themes, including the dystopian novel The Children of Men. She received numerous honours during her career and was created a life peer in 1991.
