Louis de Bernières

Louis de Bernières is a British novelist, best known for his 1994 historical novel 'Captain Corelli's Mandolin'. Born in London in 1954, he spent time in the Middle East and Surrey before briefly joining the army. He later worked as a landscape gardener, mechanic, and teacher, including a period teaching English in Colombia, which heavily influenced his early 'Latin American trilogy'. His work is noted for its blend of humor, tragedy, and historical scope, often incorporating elements of magical realism.
