Edith Pargeter

Edith Mary Pargeter, also known by her pen name Ellis Peters, was an English author celebrated for her historical fiction and mystery novels. She is best known for "The Cadfael Chronicles," a series of medieval detective stories. Pargeter also gained recognition for her translations of Czech classics. She was born in Horsehay, Shropshire, England, and her work often drew inspiration from the history and landscapes of her home region and the Welsh borderlands. Pargeter served in the Women's Royal Naval Service during World War II and was awarded the British Empire Medal. She became fluent in Czech and translated numerous works, receiving awards for her contributions to Czech culture. Birmingham University awarded her an honorary master's degree. She passed away in 1995.
